Coast Guard searching for missing boater in Gulf of Mexico

NEW ORLEANS - Coast Guard units continue searching today for a man, who went missing after a smallboat he was aboard reportedly capsized near Cat Island in the Gulf of Mexico near Gulfport, Miss., Friday, Nov. 8, 2008.

The Coast Guard began searching after a Good Samaritan rescued one of the men aboard the smallboat and reported that there was one man missing.

Coast Guard assets responding are:

  • Coast Guard Cutter Bonito from Pensacola, Fla.
  • HU-25 Falcon jet and crew from Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala.
  • HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter and crew from Aviation Training Center Mobile
  • 41-foot utility boat and crew from Station Gulfport, Miss.
  • 25-foot response boat and crew from Station Gulfport
  • HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter and crew from Air Station New Orleans

Coast Guard Sector Mobile has issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) requesting mariners in the area to keep a lookout and report any sightings to the Coast Guard.
