Coast Guard Cutter Petrel continues search for two men in plane crash

SAN DIEGO --  The Coast Guard Cutter Petrel is continuing the search for two men missing from a plane that crashed off Oceanside just after 5 p.m. today.

The Cessna 172T airplane left Montgomery Field Airport in San Diego this evening carrying three people. One man was recovered earlier by a Good Samaritan and transferred to Oceanside Harbor Police. He was taken to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., for a broken leg.

Thick fog offshore has made visibility less than 500 yards, hampering search efforts. A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a rescue boat from Station San Diego were dispatched to the scene earlier, but have since returned. The Petrel, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in San Diego, will stay on scene to continue the search throughout the night.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
