Maritime Security Commitee discusses safety in San Diego Harbor SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Area Maritime Security Committee met to discuss safety and security of the Port of San Diego during a seminar today at the Naval Training Center Promenade. The Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 requires all Captains of the Port and Area Maritime Security Committees to ensure that exercises are carried out once each calendar year to test the effectiveness of the Area Maritime Security Plan to ensure the safety and security of the port.
Today's seminar, part of Exercise Bay Shield, focused on recent legislation that effects the cooperation of local agencies and port stakeholders in responding to an emergency in the harbor. The one-day Seminar focused on awareness, preparedness for response, and crisis management and port recovery. This exercise allowed more than 20 agencies to discuss the Area Maritime Security Plan's compliance with new legislation, ensure alignment of all agency plans for response and recovery, and foster working relationships among member agencies.
A functional exercise is scheduled to take place next year as part of Bay Shield. In 2010, a larger full scale exercise is scheduled, involving the deployment of assets by the AMSC agencies. PARTICIPATING AGENCIES
