Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal seizes 137 bales of marijuana

SAN DIEGO -- The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal, homeported in Corona Del Mar, Calif., recovered 137 bales of marijuana today in international waters off the coast of Baja California, Mexico.

The crew of the cutter spotted a suspicious speed boat in the area and as they headed toward the craft, the speedboat's crew was observed throwing bales into the water.

Narwhal's crew did not intercept the speedboat, but they recovered the bales from the water which later tested positive as marijuana. A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Sector San Diego helped in the search and recovery of the bales.

The contraband was turned over to the appropriate federal authorities. The incident is currently under investigation.
