Coast Guard Conducts Medical Evacuation
SAN DIEGO -- Coast Guard Sector San Diego received a request from the cruise ship Paradise to conduct a medical evacuation of a two-year-old boy, 27 miles southwest of Point Loma, Calif., early this morning.
Due to the nature of the boy’s condition, the Coast Guard diverted a 33-foot rescue boat from Station San Diego to respond to the cruise ship’s location.
At 4:48 a.m. the crew transferred the patient, mother, and a nurse from the cruise ship. During the transit the boy began having seizures and a Coast Guard rescuer, began administering CPR.
“The Station crew did a phenomenal job,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Jason Watson, a search and rescue controller at the Joint Harbor Operations Center, at Sector San Diego. “They quickly arrived at the cruise ship’s location and safely transferred the patient, to their vessel.”
EMS transferred the boy to UC San Diego Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition.
At the time of the medical evacuation winds were 10 knots, seas two to three feet, and the air temperature was 43 degrees.
