UPDATE:  Coast Guard Interdicts 22 Migrants

SAN DIEGO -- Three Coast Guard units worked together to interdict 22 suspected migrants in the early morning hours Monday.

The Cutter Narwhal spotted a boat without navigation lights moving erratically through the water northwest of the U.S.-Mexican border about 2 a.m.  The boat gave chase, which led the Narwhal call Sector San Diego for assistance.  An MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter was launched as well a 33-foot response boat from Station San Diego and were then able to intercept the panga 10 miles south of the U.S.-Mexican border.

Once apprehended, Coast Guard members were able to safely transfer the 22 people from the panga to the Narwhal.  The suspected migrants were then taken to Ballast Pointe where they were handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for processing.

For information about the processing of the suspected migrants, please contact the Border Patrol public information officer, Darryl Reed at 619.216.4182.
