UPDATE #2: VIDEO AVAILABLE Coast Guard responds to plane crash

SAN DIEGO - The Coast Guard received a report from a Good Samaritan vessel this afternoon that they observed a plane crash into the water twenty five miles east of San Clemente Island.  While conducting a search of the area Coast Guard boats have found debris and an oil slick in the water.  A search for survivors continues.

Timeline: 

  • At approximately 2:00 p.m. the Good Samaritan vessel notified the Coast Guard of a possible downed aircraft.
  • The Good Samaritan notified the Coast Guard they were traveling through a debris field that appeared to be pieces of an aircraft.
  • There are currently several aircraft and two Coast Guard boats responding to the report and attempting to locate the debris field.
  • There are no reports of overdue commercial or military aircraft.  The Coast Guard is currently working with the FAA and Military Air Defense to determine if there is an aircraft missing.
  • At approximately 5:30 p.m. Coast Guard boats found debris and an oil slick in the area.  Several boats and a Coast Guard helicopter continue to search for survivors.
  • The Coast Guard is continuing to search for survivors through the night with three rescue boats, and will conduct a helicopter search first thing in the morning.
