Coast Guard responds to two oil spills SAN DIEGO -- The U.S. Coast Guard is responding to reports of two oil spills in San Diego Harbor this morning.The first oil spill was located off Shelter Island and was reported to the National Response Center by personnel at the High Seas Fuel Dock. The spill is a light sheen covering an area approximately a quarter mile in length extending from the America's Cup Harbor to the High Seas Fuel Dock. The second oil spill is located approximately a quarter-mile south of the Coronado Bridge and extends south toward the NASSCO facility. The spill was reported by Air Watch Traffic Helicopter. The spill is a light rainbow sheen and appears to be dissipating quickly. The National Response Corporation (NRC) Environmental Services is conducting the cleanup of both sites. The Coast Guard has implemented booming strategies outlined in the Area Contingency Plan and in partnership with the U.S. Navy, state and local responders are overseeing NRC's booming of sensitive sites that could be affected. Coast Guard surface assets and a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk continue to conduct on scene surveys of the spill area to confirm drift and employ necessary protective strategies. No source has been identified for either spills however in addition to the immediate remediation strategies being implemented the Coast Guard is conducting a thorough investigation into both spills. "Mariners are advised to use caution when transiting within the general area of the spill," said Lt.j.g. Amanda Sardone, Sector San Diego Public Information Officer. Mariners should report any impacted areas to the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802. ### |
