Coast Guard Responds to Diesel Fuel Spill
SAN DIEGO -- The U.S. Coast Guard is responding to a report of a diesel fuel spill in the vicinity of Shelter Island in San Diego Harbor this morning.
The fuel spill is a light rainbow sheen extending approximately 700 yards from a pier near High Seas Fuel Dock and was reported to the National Response Center by personnel at the fuel dock.
The National Response Corporation (NRC) Environmental Services is conducting the cleanup of the site.
California Fish and Game Oil Spill Prevention Response team (OSPR), and the Coast Guard pollution investigators are at Shelter Island inspecting vessels to determine the source of the fuel spill.
“We work closely with OSPR on every major pollution incident we have out here to ensure rapid response and minimal impact to the environment,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Adam Sudweeks, a pollution investigator at Sector San Diego.
The two oil spill incidents inside San Diego Bay, reported March 12th, are unrelated to this incident and have been cleaned up by the NRC.
Mariners are reminded that they are responsible for the costs associated with clean-up efforts of pollution from their vessel even if unintentionally discharged by automatic bilge pumps while left unattended.
Mariners should report any impacted areas to the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802.
