Coast Guard medevacs cruise ship crewmember

SAN DIEGO A Coast Guard rescue boat crew from Sector San Diego medically evacuated a 26-year-old man from a cruise ship four miles off the San Diego Coast Tuesday.

The cruise ship, Carnival Elation, contacted Coast Guard Sector San Diego at 10:45 a.m., stating one of their crewmembers, an Indonesian citizen, was suffering from stomach pains.

The cruise ship requested to have the man taken off the ship for medical attention.  A Coast Guard flight surgeon agreed, and Coast Guard Station San Diego launched a rescue boat to transfer the patient.

At 1:30 p.m., the rescue crew met the ship at the San Diego Bay entrance buoy, and transferred the man to the Coast Guard boat.  From there, he was taken to Shelter Island, transferred to emergency medical services, and taken to University of California, San Diego, Medical Center in stable condition.
