Coast Guard medevacs heart attack victim from cruise ship

SAN DIEGO A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego transported a 71-year-old man who reported signs of a heart attack aboard the cruise ship, Carnival Splendor, 130 miles southwest of San Diego Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009.

The Carnival Splendor's crew contacted the Coast Guard shortly after 7 p.m., requesting a medevac for the man. A Coast Guard flight surgeon was consulted and determined that an immediate medevac was recommended.

An MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter launched from Sector San Diego. Once on scene, the crew hoisted the man and the ship's nurse from the cruise ship and transported them to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.

The man was transferred to hospital personnel in good condition.
