Coast Guard medevacs heart attack patient from cruise ship

SAN DIEGO — An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego safely transported a man from a cruise ship approximately 300 miles south of San Diego Friday morning.

The Coast Guard received notification from the crew of a cruise ship, Regatta, just after midnight stating a 78-year-old man was suffering from heart attack symptoms and requesting a medical evacuation. A Coast Guard flight surgeon was consulted and determined that a medevac was recommended.

The helicopter crew launched from Sector San Diego to conduct the medevac. Once on scene, the helicopter crew hoisted the man from the cruise ship. A C-130 Hercules plane supported the medevac by providing long-range coverage for the helicopter.

On scene weather during the hoist was calm seas, light northerly winds and good visibility.

The man was transported to Sector San Diego and transferred to emergency medical personnel.
