WHITE HOUSE DRUG CZAR TO ANNOUNCE USCG DRUG SEIZURES AFFECT ON COCAINE PRICE AND PURITY, WILL RECOGNIZE SAN DIEGO-BASED CUTTER FOR RECORD COCAINE SEIZURES

SAN DIEGO - John P. Walters, Director of National Drug Control Policy and President Bush's "Drug Czar," will travel to San Diego on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, to discuss changes in the prices and purity of cocaine on U.S. streets due in part to record seizures of cocaine on the open seas. At the street level, the price of cocaine has increased by 19 percent between February and September 2005; the purity has decreased by 15 percent in the same time period.

During his visit, Director Walters will be joined by Adm. Thomas H. Collins, Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard, to present the crew of the San Diego-based USCGC Hamilton with an award commemorating their success for seizures during an 90-day patrol, which concluded on October 3, 2005. In a five-week period, Hamilton seized nearly 13 metric tons of cocaine.
