Hurricane Ike Information Site

Coast Guard Cutters, Motor Life Boats and small boats sit tied to the remaining docks in the setting sun Sept. 18, 2008, at Coast Guard Sector Field Office Galveston, following Hurricane Ike.

Despite the hurricane's high winds and storm surge, the units at SFO Galveston remain operational, and many aids to navigation units from all over the Gulf Coast are working to replace the nearly 90-percent of the aids to navigation, which were destroyed by the storm.

During his visit, President Bush thanked all crewmembers for their dedication before, during and after Hurricane Ike.  Following his arrival, President Bush boarded a helicopter for an overflight.

Heavy flooding from Hurricane Ike damaged the MSUs Small Boat Facility and Coast Guard crewmembers are working to clean large amounts of mud from the facility.

The crew got underway to conduct a pollution response inspection along the river. Many boats used the dock as a staging area to launch boats carrying deployable containment boom to place around polluted areas.
